Are users better-off with new transit lines?

چکیده
This paper studies the entry of new competitors in public transport like long distance busses that compete with rail. A stylized model is used that analyzes the addition of a new more direct line in an existing network. We show that the introduction of the new line is only beneficial if there are relatively many users that want to use the new direct line. Our result raises serious concerns with respect to the decentralized management of transit systems. JEL codes: R42; R48; H42

Evaluating Transit
This paper presents a model that calculates the social welfare benefits of using additional subsidy to reduce fare levels or improve service levels of public transit in Chicago. The model differentiates between the effects in peak and off-peak periods for both bus and rapid rail service. The potential welfare benefits of transit improvements accrue to several different groups of people: (1) exi...
متن کاملTransit Signal Priority: Proposing a Novel Algorithm to Decrease Delay and Environmental Impacts in BRT Route Intersections
Intersections are considered as the most critical parts of the bus rapid transit (BRT) system. Transit signal priority is one of the efficient solutions to reduce BRT fleet delays at intersections. The aim of this study is to propose a new algorithm to decrease the BRT fleet delays at actuated intersections, while reducing the negative impacts on different approaches. The adaptive strategy is a...
متن کاملInvestigating on the Effects of Congestion Pricing on Increasing Public Transit Share
Nowadays, traffic management policy in metropolitans is focused on increasing the share of public transit. The limitation of supply and slowing growth of road infrastructures have provided congestion for users who choose personal cars. Therefore, applying demand management policies which decrease the utility of personal cars and increase the tendency to public transit can be very important. Con...
متن کاملStyle versus Service? An Analysis of User Perceptions of Transit Stops and Stations
Transit travelers expend a great deal of time and energy on out-of-vehicle walking and waiting, which significantly affects their perceived burdens of travel. Accordingly, this article is concerned with ways to reduce the perceived burdens of out-of-vehicle time spent walking, waiting, and transferring to improve users’ experience at transit stops and stations. We surveyed 749 transit users at ...
متن کاملOptimization of Number of Operators and Allocation of New Lines in an Oligopolistic Transit Market
This paper proposes a novel model for determining the optimal number of transit operators and the allocation of new lines in an oligopolistic transit market. The proposed model consists of three interrelated sub-models that are associated with three types of players; namely, transit authority, transit operators, and transit passengers. In practice, the operating cost per unit of transit line of...
